The purpose of the two small upright brackets located at East and West is unknown

The master unit holds the magnetic element

a winder and duration-selector is visible at the bottom of the recording drum

The scale is interesting in that the long pointer rotates clockwise from the 6 o'clock position indicating altitude in 100 Meters per index tick mark along the outer scale
